Blodeuwedd pendant

Blodeuwedd pendant

I was deeply inspired by the story of the goddess Blodeuwedd for this piece.

Long story very short – In Welsh mythology, the magicians Math and Gwydion created Blodeuwedd from the flowers of oak, meadowsweet, and broom. She was given to Llew the son of the goddess Arianrhod without her consent to be his bride. Essentially, she was made by men for a man, given no freedom or choice in the matter.

Blodeuwedd eventually falls in love with another man and the two of them plot to kill Llew so they can be together. Her punishment for this is she is then transformed into an owl. In my opinion, ultimately what was meant to be her curse was a blessing; now she is free. No longer bound to a life she did not choose.

Her story to me is about living life on your own terms, and the transformation that occurs when we reclaim our identity. Yes, there are at times consequences and risks but that’s the price of freedom. Blodeuwedd represents hope, transformation, love, power and independence. She reminds us to stay true to ourselves.

If her story calls to you, I highly recommend reading far better, and much more in depth writings on her. And if she inspires you, or if owls speak to you than this pendant might just be meant for you!

This talisman pendant features a hand engraved barn owl, falling oak leaves, and a hammered brass moon all patinaed for a soft matte finish. Sterling silver. Pendant measures approximately 2.5” long. 20”  silver chain.
